Mario's Age
By Claws
Mario is about fifty years old. That may sound alarming to some of you, but if you'll accept that Donkey Kong Country (SNES) occurred in 1994, it will make sense.
First of all, Cranky Kong was most likely sixty-five in Donkey Kong Country. He looked about that age, at least. It's common knowledge Cranky was the original Donkey Kong. In those early games he looked about forty-five. I make this assumption based on the art for Donkey Kong '94 (GB), which I consider to have happened around the same time as the arcade Donkey Kong game. The difference between sixty-five and forty-five is twenty. Subtract twenty years from 1994. This yields the year 1974.
I think it's reasonable to believe Mario was twenty when the arcade games took place. Any older and he would be too old now. If Mario was twenty years old in 1974, he turned fifty in 2004. This also fittingly corresponds to the release of Mario vs. Donkey Kong, a game that resurrected the feud between Mario and Donkey Kong (albeit Jr.)--the very feud that began Mario's gaming career. That Mario would look older at fifty is not a valid counterargument. One only has to consider Jackie Chan or Jerry Seinfeld. They're around fifty, and they still look young.
I understand it's hard to accept Mario as being fifty years old, but it's the youngest he can be if his age is to correspond to Donkey Kong Sr.'s age. One could argue that time passes at a slower rate in Mario's dimension, though. This would debunk my theory.
