Where and How DK'94 Takes Place

By Claws

In this essay I will examine why I think Donkey Kong (GB), or DK'94, takes place on Donkey Kong Island, how the game progresses around the island, and how the locations in the game relate to locations we know today.

Many have said the game takes place in and around New York because of the first world. It's a large city. First of all, though, there are no jungles near New York. But then it is said that they went from New York to other parts of the world. I think that's a very awkward and unnecessary theory. It only showed them on a plane once. For some more information on areas in DK'94, I think we should look to Donkey Kong Land (GB). It showcases many of these areas in their modern incarnations.

Now, here is my take on the locations of the areas in both DK'94 and DKL. Wouldn't it make sense for Big Ape City to be near the other industrialized area of DK Island, Kremkroc Ind.? It would also be convenient for Kremlantis to be somewhere around the Vine Valley area, as part Vine Valley contained temples and water (Kremlantis is just under the water). Monkey Mountain & Chimpanzee Clouds would also be suited to a pre-established place on DK Island. Gorilla Glacier consists of mountains and caves covered in snow, so couldn't Monkey Mountain & Chimpanzee Clouds (which consist of mountains and caves) be on the upper part of the isle, but lower than Gorilla Glacier?

Having established this, the natural progression around the island in DKL is up. We start at the bottom of the island in the Kongo Jungle, then travel a little bit higher to the temple/water area of Vine Valley, then proceed a little bit higher into the Monkey Mountain & Chimpanzee Clouds area, and then across the island to the Kremkroc Ind./Big Ape City area.

DK'94's progression around the island is a little less logical... but that would make sense because DK Sr. is trying to lose Mario throughout the entire game. This time, we begin in Big Ape City, near the top of the island. Next, we follow DK down the island to Vine Valley (the forest area). DK then hops onto the Gangplank Galleon (the ship area; it would later be comandeered by the Kremlings) and sails around the coast of the island to the Kongo Jungle (the jungle area). After recruiting DK Jr., Cranky then moves on to the Angry Aztec area (the desert area), which is presumably on the side of the island opposite the one the Kongo Jungle is on. (This would make sense, as the Kongo Jungle probably gets all the moisture, leaving none for the Angry Aztec area as the clouds move over the mountains to the other side of the island.) From here DK hops onto a plane (if the Kongs know how to build an ultra-modern metropolis, they probably know how to build airplanes). From the Angry Aztec area, the airplane takes them up to an iceberg in the Gorilla Glacier area. Cranky's escape comes to an end in the Monkey Mountain area (the Rocky Valley area), where his tower is.
